People’s literacy skills as adults are largely determined in their early years. Yet 29% of kindergarten aged children in Alberta are experiencing great difficulty in one or more of the areas of development essential for learning! (this is a higher proportion than the Canadian norm of 25.4%) It is estimated that by the end of Grade 6, at least 30% of Canadian children cannot read or write well enough to succeed in school.

Based on these numbers approximately 23,100 Calgarian children between the ages of 0 and 4 suffer from low literacy skills.
